WAHULL, Manors and Estates- given in [pg 11 SEATS AND FAMILY ESTATES

Anthony Lower’s “Family Names of Great Britain” is the following: “Wahull -The seat of an Ancient Barony -The great Domesday Baron, known as Walter Flanderensis, from his being a Fleming held it, his family were called De Wahuls.”

Lyson’s “Magna Brittania,”: “Walter Flandrensis (ancestor of the barons Wahul) had five manors in the County of Bedford. The chief seat of the Wahuls, was at Wodhull, or Odell Castle.”

SEATS AND FAMILY ESTATES-

  1. Wahull Castle -Co: Bedford… “The River Ouse runs unver Wodhull,

formerly Wayhul -which also has its Barons of Wayhul, eminent for their ancient nobility -where was a Castle whose Barony consisted of 300 Knights Fees in divers Counties.

Also, in Anthony Lower’s “Family Names of Great Britain” is the following: “Wahull -The seat of an Ancient Barony -The great Domesday Baron, known as Walter Flanderensis, from his being a Fleming held it, his family were called De Wahuls.”
In Lyson’s “Magna Brittania,”: “Walter Flandrensis (ancestor of the barons Wahul) had five manors in the County of Bedford. The chief seat of the Wahuls, was at Wodhull, or Odell Castle.”
II. Pateshull Manor -Co; Northampton vide Domesday Book: “Simon, 2nd, Baron de Wahull, gave moiety of Pateshull Church to Godston Priory temp. Henry I. or Stephen.”
III. Langford Manor -Co; Bedford vide Domesday Book: “This manor was parcel of the Baron de Wahull, and continued in possession of the family of the Wahulls or Wodhulls, Lords of the Barony till the reign of Edward IV. (1491)
IV. Segenhoe -Co; Beford vide Domesday Book: At the time of the Norman Survey 1081, parcels of the Baron de Wahull. There was anciently a Castle at Segenhoe which existed as late as the year 1276, possibly a seat of the Barons Wahull…
   V. Bragborough Manor -Co; Northampton vide Domesday Book: “The Manor of Bragsborough in this parcel in this parcel was at the time of the Norman Survey, 1081, and long afterwards, parcel of the Baron de Wahull.”
   VI. Shortgrove Manor -County Essex.
[pg 12] VII. Dunstaple Priory -Co; Beford vid Dugdale’s “Monasticom Angelicanum.”
VIII. Langport Manor -Co; Northampton A.D. 1186.
IX. Warkworth Castle -Co; Northampton. (Through intermarriage with Elizabeth, heir of her brother, Thomas Chetwode, about 1409.)
   X. Chetwode Manor -Co; Buckinghamshire. (Through Elizabeth Chetwode, about 1409.)
XI. Thenford Manor -Co; Northampton. “Purchased by Foulke, 22nd, Baron Wahull, about 1508.”
   XII Holdenby’s Manor -Co; Northampton A.D. 1548.
XIII. Wappenham Manor: purchased by John Wodhull, Esq., of Valentine Knightley. A.D. 1742.
So interesting is the description… “Odell, Woodhulle and formerly Wahul. The name of this village is from its situation Woodhull or Woodhill from the hill and fine wood near it.
“It seems to be a very old and proper name for formerly it had belonged to Barons de Wahull, eminent for their ancient nobility, whose baronies consisted of 300 Knights fees.
…”Little remains of the old Works… “Among the paintings mentioned in Odell Castle
…”Odell, in the hundred of Willey and deanery of Clopham, on the river Ouse, ten miles northwest of Bedford on the borders of Northamptonshire.”
...Lyson, “It seems difficult to reconcile this with its descent from the Lords Wahul, to the Chetwodes, which is proved by various records. The family of Wahul continued in the male lines as Lords of Wahul till the time of Henry VIII, when their female of Anthony titular [a purely formal position or title without any real authority] Lord Wahul, married Richard Chetwode, Esq., of Oakley in Staffordshire.”
