Selah Murray Stevens Project - Helm

(Jody Gray) this in an on-going project; I decided to create a Blog Post as a place to keep track of my research - kind of a "journal" of this project. The reason for the project is: I cannot find the names of the parents of Selah Murray Stevens, oddly, he's given a full birth date and location; which if known you would assume his parents would be known. Also, he married Eliza Helm, a descendant of the Woodhull family and nobility on England; it's obvious that she's proud of her heritage. I assume there is something "not to be proud of" in Selah's parentage, e.g. they were Loyalists during the Revolutionary War and removed to Canada...

I've been working on the Helm Branch, tracing their movement after arrival in America...
Current Project: George M Helm, brother of Eliza Helm... an SAR Application lead me to Canada... however, the Warwick and Matchett Families listed originated in England and immigrated to Canada; they did not immigrate to America and then to Canada after the Revolutionary War... there is a connection between the Helm-Woodhull and FitzStephens Families of England, who followed William the Conqueror to England after the Battle of Hastings (1066); those who supported William, militarily or financially were rewarded with land in England...

Blog Post: SAR Application, Henry J Matchett b. 1891 http://historicalandmisc.blogspot.com/2016/05/sar-application-henry-j-matchett-b-1891.html
SAR Application, new surnames: Frederick Henry Warwick b. Warwickshire, England, immigrated to Canada; he married Eliza Helen Helm b. Oswego, NY *how did they meet??? Their daughter, Amelia Warwick m: Abraham James Matchett; his family immigrated from Cavan, Ireland to Canada...
Frederick and Eliza Helen; daughter, Amelia and Abraham Matchett immigrate to St. Paul, Ramsey Co, MN.

Movement of the Helm Family: The Woodhull and Airard FitzStehpens/Stevens in Europe, begins in 1066 with the Battle of Hastings, migration from Normandy / Flanders to England; supporters of William the Conqueror were rewarded with land. *the Woodhull lineage begins with Walter aka Seier de Flanders, de Seton from Normandy to England in 1066… Surname becomes de Wahull (Baron of the estate, aka Odell Castle in Bedfordshire -the seat of de Wahull land)... Thomas II, Baron, Warkworth, Northamptonshire -through marriage… Nicholas, Knight… Fulk, Knight… Lawrence, Esquire, Thenford, Northamptonshire where immigrant Richard Woodhull I. is born; Richard I immigrant to America; his son, Richard Woodhull II. was b. Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England Stevens Family [Source: Find A Grave]: Thomas Stevens married Mary Fletcher on November 18, 1655 in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England. -they were the  parents of Jacob (March 01, 1672-March 10, 1754) married Anna Mary Whipple. He was the armorer of Buttolph lane, London, who was contracted with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and government in march 1629 for the supply of arms. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bay company, gave fifty pounds to the common stock and sent three sons Thomas, Cyprian, and Richard and one daughter Mary to New England. Mary married Captain Whipple of Ipswich. Thomas and Cyprian came in 1660 with Captain Green. Cyprian went to Chelsea and later to Lancaster.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Bay_Colony Massachusetts Bay Colony An English settlement on the east coast of North America (Massachucetts Bay) in the 17th century; situated around the present-day cities of Salem and Boston… founded by the owners of the Massachusetts Bay Company… begun in 1628… the population was strongly Puritan… the electorate was limited to freeman, who had been examined for their religious views and formally admitted to the local church. As a consequence, the colonial leadership exhibited intolerance to other religious view, including Anglican, Quaker, and Baptist theologies.

Tribal distribution, ca. 1600.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans on the eastern shore of New England, the area around Massachusetts Bay was the territory of several Algonquian-speaking tribes, including the Massachusett, Nauset, and Wampanoag. The Pennacooks occupied the Merrimack River valley to the north, and the Nipmuc, Pocumtuc, and Mahican, occupied the western lands of present-day Massachusetts, although some of those tribes were under tribute to the Mohawk, who were expanding aggressively from present-day upstate New York. The total Indian population in 1620 has been estimated to be 7,000 with the population of New England at 15–18,000. This number was significantly larger as late as 1616; in later years contemporary chroniclers interviewed Indians who described a major pestilence that killed between one and two thirds of the population. The land use patterns of the natives included plots cleared for agricultural purposes, and woodland territories for the hunting of game. Land divisions between the tribes were well understood.

(Jody Gray) This SAR Application had me baffled… after comparing what Henry Jeffrey Matchett had on his application to what I had in my Ancestry.com Gray-Piper Tree; I saw that his lack of dates for some of his ancestors had caused him to get the lineage out of order, and, he left a few people out.

His lineage can be followed from beginning to end when I reorder a couple accordingly and add the missing links. His lineage and our family lineage breaks off with the children of Woodhull Helm b. 1777 and Eliza McDonald b. 1778: Henry’s lineage is their son, George M. Helm b. 1799; our lineage is their daughter, Eliza Helm b. 1802.  Otherwise, the lineage is the same from Woodhull Helm b. 1777 to Nathaniel Woodhull b. 1722 (only, as previously mentioned, Henry is missing a few people and dates).
Henry’s application provides some new information for the Helm Branch: he was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
