History of the town of Plymouth from its first settlement in 1620 to the Present time Part 1: Personal Note: for Yr 1686, Robert died in 1650 so information doesn’t apply to him. But, I couldn’t find a way to attach it to Zachariah so I kept the Media here and made reference to it as the Source of the information I added to Zachariah’s timeline from it.

The Wives of Robert Paddock: Personal Note: later in my research, I found most of this information to be undocumented… I’m in the process of deleting some of the information that I entered into my Family Tree profile pages for these people (Paddock, Palmer). Problem: I used the Source (a lot), see, Media: The Wives of Robert Paddock

mostly duplicate information I already have from other Media. Contains some errors and speculative (undocumented) information, especially relating to Mary (unknown maiden name)... I could list only my ancestry lineage, son Zachariah Paddock, but that paints a limited picture of the family. By including the others (whom I spent time researching), I’ve learned more about the time in which the family lived (history) and come across other historical Media. In some cases, the daughters have married historically interesting men. Media for William Palmer Sr (1581-1637)
Will of William Palmer Sr:
William Palmer (Abt 1590-1638) Plymouth Colony Personal Note: duplicate information. But, this document is contains “credible SOURCE material” with a list of historical and genealogical publications. Organized by Source #’s and the publication it came from.
The First Comers: Under the original agreement with the “merchant adventurers”, those who came and worked as partners in the Plymouth venture… The (Ship) Fortune, arrived at Plymouth, 11/9/1621. The list is based on the 1623 Division of Land and….
New England, The Great Migration:(page header, Walter Palmer, bottom of the page begins William Palmer, OPEN Media and click on arrow to go to the next page). (The Great Migration Begins, bio sketch, William Palmer Sr). Personal Note: much of this is duplicate information. I’m relying mostly on information linked to records, e.g. Town of Plymouth (court and meetings).
Plymouth Colony, Its History and People pg 335 Bio William Palmer 1581-1637 *Book by Eugene A Stratton. (an Ancestry.com resource) Personal Note: William Palmer Sr refers to a granddaughter, Rebecca in his Will; could be daughter of Sarah Palmer Howley or daughter of William Palmer Jr as mentioned above (here). Quote from will: “Rebecca my grandchild and Moyses Rowley whom I love, but not so as to put into their father or mother’s hands but preserve it for them till they come to years of discretion… young (Joseph aka Moses in my Family Tree) Rowley to be placed with Mr. Partridge that he might be brought up in the fear of God…” “not into their father or mother’s hands” I conclude is he speaking of Elizabeth Hodgkins and John Willis the man she married after the death of William Palmer Jr’s death . Personal Note:: the Rebecca named in his Will is the daughter of William Palmer Jr m: Elizabeth, not the daughter of Sarah Palmer m: Henry Rowley; I have removed children listed for them because they are undocumented and listing them adds to the confusion.
Wm Palmer, Palmer Family: mostly duplicate information that I already have. Good Sources and references. Note: the author this document states Robert Paddock is his Grandfather (a good researcher wanting to use accurate information).
Plymouth Colony Records and Court Orders: Personal Note: may be duplicate information. 7/23/1633, Will. Mendloue (aka Mendlove), servant of Will Palmer, whipped for attempting uncleanes with the maid servant of the said Palmer, and for running away from his master. 7/23/1633, Will Palmer sold the time of service he had in Will Mendloue to Richard Church. 8/15/1633, (Alice, wife of deceased John Thorpe), turned over the time of his apprenticed carpenter (will be expired Apr. 1637), Robert Barker, to William Palmer, naylor, of Plymouth. Wm Palmer, Palmer Family of Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, USA: July 1621 & BIO: Personal Notes: duplicate information, beginning with 1st Generation: Undocumented information, e.g. William Palmer Sr m: (1) Margaret White (2) Frances Blossom (3) Mary Trine
However, he did bequeath to “Moyses Rowly” whom I love… Personal Note: this is not the full quote, it does not include “my grandchild Rebecca” prior to his mention of Moyses *other researchers have stated that Moyses was William’s servant… *this document goes on to say that on Mar 7, 1753/4 Sarah’s son Moses received a cow “in respect of a will extant of William Palmer of Plymouth, deceased.” [see Our Rowley Line]. *the Rebecca mentioned is the daughter of Elizabeth Hodgkins m: William Palmer Jr, not the daughter of Sarah Palmer m: Henry Rowley.
The only child of William (Jr) and Elizabeth (Hodgkins) Palmer was: Rebecca Palmer b. 1635/6. In his 1637 Will, William Palmer Sr made a conditional bequest to his grandchild Rebecca *but not so as to put it into (her father and mothers hands but preserve it for her till (she) comes to years of Discretion (age 21 ?). Personal Note: this implies that her parents are alive at the time he composed his Will (William Palmer Jr is said to have died prior to his father bf 8/25/1636. Elizabeth m: Deacon John Willis 3/27/xxxx ERROR. This doesn’t make sense unless she divorced him which would be unusual.) Likely, he was referring to her parents, Elizabeth and step-father, John Willis (as a minor and a female she would need a guardian)... I can see where information on this family has so much ‘speculation’ !!
Personal Note: appears (in the Colonial days) the term “daughter-in-law” was used to denote a “daughter through marriage to her mother; nowadays it’s used to denote a son’s wife after marriage. This is most likely the reason for the confusion in Robert Paddock’s “Estate settlement notice” listing William Palmer Jr (2) as a “son-in-law” (through Robert’s marriage to his mother, William Jr (2) became his “son-in-law” not used to refer to his being a “son-in-law” because he married one of Robert’s daughters. SO MANY ways to become confused !!
Children of William and Mary *for an explanation of the use of “son-in-law” read the explanation, just above in Rebecca Palmer’s notes. This author thinks Robert Paddock and his first wife, Mary Holmes, adopted him. There was an obligation of… to “good wife paddock” for ye child in William Palmer Sr’s Will. Personal Note: Why would William Palmer Sr allow his son to be adopted, wouldn’t he want to preserve lineage (after all, he was named William Jr (2) as he was born after the death of William Jr)? And, there’s record that William Palmer Jr (2) claimed his inheritance when he became “of age’... Another interesting record is given: 10/20/1647 (after his wife died and he married Mary Unknown Palmer) Robert Paddock asked the Court for “an account of which is due to him by the last will and testament of William Palmer, deceased. Presumably the obligation for his child, William Palmer Jr (2). notation I added to William Palmer Jr (2) Media: Parentage of William Palmer Jr (2) (origins of this information, and the place to begin to sort out the mystery surrounding the parentage of William Palmer Jr (2) because it contains links to records / sources of information besides the usual stories and speculations about his parentage. Robert Paddock and William Palmer Sr, by Jody Gray
The connection between these two families is: both men were married to Mary Unknown Palmer. Unknown, because her parentage is unknown; a mystery woman because there is no documentation of her parentage, her birth date or location, how she came to be in the Plymouth Colony of early America.
There are many ‘undocumented stories’ about her; one such is that she came to America as a servant of William Palmer Sr’s daughter, Sarah. In July 23, 1633, A servant of William Palmer Sr was whipped for attempting uncleanes with his maid, it was later written that it was this Mary (though her name was not given in the complaint). She gave birth to a son named William Palmer Jr (2) whose date of birth is undocumented. This created a scandal; that the child’s biological father was actually William Jr who was engaged to Elizabeth Hodgkins whom he would later marry. It was said that William Sr married her to ‘protect that future marriage’. That the child was given over to the Robert Paddock family after his birth *my note: because he wouldn’t want this child that wasn’t his in his house????
A better scenario that’s presented is that William Sr. married the young Mary (surname not given) hoping to produce an heir: the child was named William Jr (2) because William Jr (1) had died in 1636 not long after his marriage to Elizabeth Hodgkins and the birth of their daughter Rebecca in 1635. A grandchild, Rebecca (surname not given) is an inheritor in William Sr’s will. William Palmer Jr (2) was born after the death of William Sr. in 1637; after his birth he lived at the Robert Paddock home and he was cared for by the ‘goodwife’ Paddock.
Evidence that fits this scenario:
1 After the death of her husband, William Palmer Jr’s wife Elizabeth (Hodgkins) remarried (1636) a man named John Willis; he sued the estate of William Sr for land he “had a right to by marriage”.
2 William Palmer Jr (2) claimed his inheritance in 1659 at age 21; he also received land distributed to his father in 1640.
How is Robert Paddock connected?
He married the widow Mary Unknown Palmer after the death of his wife (aft 1643); he was about 60 years old; it appears common knowledge that she was ‘a much younger woman’. She gave birth to a daughter, Susanna Palmer, in 1649, not long after the birth of their daughter, Robert Paddock died. What seems odd, to me, is that they only had one child in the 7 years they were married. Some sources state their marriage as about 1646, which appears more reasonable, to me.
Speculations that make more sense, to me: after William Palmer Sr died, his wife Mary Unknown Palmer went to live with the Paddock’s as arranged by William (refer to his Will) prior to his death due to the young age of his wife and the possibility of her pregnancy. (In 1647, Robert Paddock petitioned the court for debt owed him related to ‘the child’ mentioned in the will of William Palmer Sr.) She continued to live with them, likely helpful to the ‘goodwife’ in caring for her large family. Mary (Holmes) Palmer, wife of Robert, may have died during childbirth or shortly after (1643). Mary unknown Palmer most likely stayed at the home of Robert Paddock to care for his young children after the death of their mother (Robert Jr 9, Zachariah 7, Mary 5, Alice 3, John a newborn). Mary Unknown Palmer’s child, William Jr (2), would have been 5.
Most men remarried not long after the death of their wife when they had young children at home. The marriage would have been beneficial for both of them; after the death of her second husband: “in December of that same year his wife sold ‘her’ house, (blacksmith) shop, garden.” She remarried in 1651, again, soon after the death of her husband. In those days a woman had to have a ‘man’ to oversee her financial affairs; a woman had no right to own property or manage her own money until decades later. According to William Palmer’s will she possibly had a ‘guardian’ by the name of Mr. Edward Winslow.
It appears that her son, William Jr (2) cared about his mother; in 1659 he received his inheritance and land in Acushnet and built a home there, he moved his mother and his stepfather to Acushnet in 1660.
My conclusion, after spending hours ‘“knee deep in mud” is: it’s an interesting story no matter what the “facts” are; seems the only “evidence” is the children Mary gave birth to: William Palmer Jr (2) m: Susannah Briggs and Susannah Paddock m: John Eddy. There’s definitely enough material here for a Book, Movie, Television series!
The hours of research were well spent, they lead me to a lot of interesting information about the way things were in the time of the Plymouth Colonies and I learned things that are not taught in school textbooks!
